OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2001

13 and Counting!

Outreach to girls is one of our main focuses.  In fact, it’s one of the reasons we are visiting all the School Districts and the Library Commission.  The Commission is pleased to present over 50 copies of “Nine and Counting” for each of the high-school libraries in Contra Costa County.  Nine and Counting” was written about nine U.S. women senators.  The book relates the paths each followed to leadership in the U.S. senate.  The senators tell how ordinary girls and women overcame many hurdles to find the power to make their views known, and to bring about positive change.  We hope this book will inspire today’s girls to set their own goals, and to know that they can achieve those goals.  Click here to see the article from the Contra Costa Times.

APRIL 2001

Equal Pay Day

April 3, 2001

The median earnings of women in California are only 79% compared to men. Across the country on April 3rd, workers’ rights advocates will take part in a day of action to end unfair pay practices-a top concern for women and people of color nationally and in California.

Nationally, the Census Bureau reports that the average woman earns just 72 cents compared to the average man. When looking exclusively at the earnings for women of color, the wag gage is even worse. African-American women made 65 cents on the dollar compared to the highest earners (white men) and Hispanic women make only 52 cents. Men of color also experience wage disparities. The ration for African-American men is 81 cents while for Hispanic men is 62 cents.

The Contra Costa Commission for Women is joining the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE), and hundreds of organizations nationwide to observe Equal Pay Day on Tuesday, April 3, 2001. Tuesday symbolizes the day when women’s wages catch up to men’s wages from the previous week. In other words, because women earn less, on average, they must work nearly seven days to earn what the average man would earn in five.

Economic equity is an issue that affects all of us. Working together, we can ensure that all Americans get the respect that comes with a fair paycheck.

AUGUST 2000

Women's Equality Day Lunch - Success!
August 26th 2000

We had relaxing and entertaining lunch at Liberty Hotel Restaurant in Pittsburg, CA. The lunch was served in the beautiful atmosphere of the converted hotel.  We had the place to ourselves.  Over 35 women joined us to celebrate Women's Equality Day!

Pictures from the Event

Ms. Melodee Parker, a performance artist, entertained us in the retelling of the story and life of Nellie Bly. Ms. Parker took us on a journey of the life and experiences of Nellie Bly.  It was an education and inspiration.  We were honored with the presence of Supervisor Donna Gerber, Mayor Mary Rocha of Antioch, and Mayor Millie Greenberg of Danville.  Most everyone else was able to bring someone special in their lives and it was a most enjoyable time.  We were able to make a contribution of the left over food to the local Antioch shelter.

Please join us next year for what is expected to be another wonderful event!  Look here for the upcoming announcement.
